American Technology :: Computers

American Technology In 1957 the USSR launches Sputnik, the first artificial earth satellite. In response, the United States forms the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) within the Department of Defense (DoD) to establish US lead in science and technology applicable to the military. In 1962 RAND Paul Baran, of the RAND Corporation, was commissioned by the U.S. Air Force to do a study on how it could maintain its command and control over its missiles and bombers, after a nuclear attack. This was to be a military research network that could survive a nuclear strike, decentralized so that if any locations (cities) in the U.S. were attacked, the military could still have control of nuclear arms for a counter-attack. In 1968 ARPA awarded the ARPANET contract to BBN. BBN had selected a Honeywell minicomputer as the base on which they would build the switch. The physical network was constructed in 1969, linking four nodes: University of California at Los Angeles, SRI (in Stanford), University of California at Santa Barbara, and University of Utah. The network was wired together via 50 Kbps circuits. In today’s society the Internet has greatly reduced the number of sent letters through the US postal service. This is true because if you can send the same information to somebody without wasting paper it is much better on the environment. Another reason why so many people have switched to using e-mail is that it is just simply faster than waiting for a letter in the mail. One more reason people use e-mail more is that the rate of postage to send a letter is steadily going up. It is currently at 37 cents per letter where sending e-mail is free. Some of the negative effects of this shift of people using e-mail over actually mailing their letters is the postage per letter is increasing more often than ever because more people use the internet to send letters now because it is just faster than mailing a letter which could take up to a week to get to your house where e-mail is instantaneous. The Internet’s impact on me personally is good overall. This is true because I surf the Internet when I’m bored, the Internet has online games that I can play with other people on the other side of the world if I wanted to. The Internet has all kinds of databases, which helps me on research papers like this one.

Jazz Performance Essay

Two weeks ago, I attended a jazz performance in a jazz bar together with a few close friends. It was a two hour show and there were 3 sets. The band was made up of five members. One played the drums, another was on piano, two played wind instruments, and the other served as the lead singer. Their performance was very alive and truly entertaining. They accepted requests from the guests. The band had a wide repertoire. Mostly, the songs they played were derived from the blues era. However, one set was devoted to recent jazz hits such as those of Michael Buble. Some of the songs they played were those of Marvin Gaye, Louis Armstrong, and Kenny G. Also, they devoted majority of their third set to Bossa Nova sound. The band did not play any of their own compositions. Being that they were only formed six months ago, they have yet to reach the point wherein they can come up with their own songs. Their show was truly entertaining. They brought a lot of brightness to an otherwise dull venue. There was not much lighting in the bar. The spotlight was directed towards the stage. I believe such lighting was meant to emphasize the intimacy of the event and of the place. Majority of the crowd was composed of couples. The music they played was ideal for dates. The music they played enhanced the romantic mood inside the venue. There was no political symbolism in their music. The main purpose of their music was to entertain the guests. Admittedly, there was nothing truly special about their performance. In fact, it can be considered a regular gig for a regular band. However, the important element in their performance was that they were able to entertain the guests and that they were able to make the people enjoy their time listening to their music.

Sensory Perception

Our senses nourish our brain like food feeds our body, without their input our brains would be very hollow and lacking of knowledge (Kirby & Goodpaster, 2007). For knowledge we heavily rely on what we perceive from our senses, as they provide first-hand experiences, giving us primary evidence on surroundings and situations. However human’s five senses touch, taste, sight, sound and smell also have their imitations, so therefore they each have weaknesses to the amount of accuracy of knowledge they can give. Starting from the sense of sight, a popular expression is â€Å"seeing is believing† as we depend on this sense to confirm reality. However beliefs from sight vary from person to person as we perceive things differently. An example of this would be the fact there was a time when people believed the earth was flat, as that was how it appeared as people could see the distant horizon as a straight line, it was only when the few thought otherwise went forth to prove against this knowledge that they were able to open new vistas of reality through their vision. Hearing, another sense has also been important for the use of human survival as a way of hearing unusual sounds that may stand for danger and for communication through language. However, human hearing can be limited, as often scientists find the existence or presence of sounds we cannot hear through our own ears. A human hearing deteriorates through age, as sensitivity towards sounds of higher frequency is lost. However our hearing is sophisticated enough that we can organize the sounds we hear, grouping and segregating these factors so in one aspect we hear what we want to hear. Sounds can also be interpreted or misinterpreted by different people as they stimulate varied emotions. As we generally connect the sounds we hear back to our memory, meaning we can recognize a person with a distinguishable voice. The sense of smell is important and is often used subconsciously for instinctual reasons. As recently discovered the extent to which the smell of a partner can affect our attraction to them. Our perceptions and evaluations others are influenced by their smell, as unpleasant smells connect to our disgusts or negative opinion of another. However, the perception of what is a good or bad smell can be interpreted differently between people as it is attached to previous knowledge gained. Knowledge, justification and critical thinking are three factors that contribute to the accuracy of sensory data (Mohanan, 2000). Critical thinking is the mental process of reflecting upon something to assess its credibility, truth, significance, usefulness, value or goodness on the basis of information available to us and a mode of justification that we consider legitimate. Critical thinking, knowledge and justification support the accuracy of information that our senses feed our brain. What we call knowledge is a collection of propositions that we believe to be true. A knowledge claim becomes part of the knowledge for an individual when the claim is accepted as true. Justification involves providing reasons for accepting propositions that we regards as knowledge, that is, for considering them to be true. It also involved providing reasons for rejecting the propositions that we regard as non-knowledge, considering them to be false. In other words, justification involves the defense of what we regards as true, and the refutation of what we regard as false. Observations, generalizations and theories are strategies of justification when using the senses as a viable way of gaining knowledge. Psychologists have long debated if perception is in fact due to nature or nurture. Beginning from the view point of nature, Gibson’s bottom up/direct theory that all the information we need to perceive is provided by our visual environment e. g. nature, rather than having to use past knowledge or experience (Mace, 2005). Additionally, Gibson and Gibson later proposed their Differentiation Theory which explains how the innate system develops. They suggested when young, we lack the ability to differentiate between objects. However, as we get older we develop the ability to differentiate, for this to take place all the necessary information needed is found is our visual environment. Next, from the view point that perception is a processes of nurture comes from Gregory’s top down/indirect theory which suggest that often the perceptual sensory data we receive is ambiguous and impoverished so perception often relies on the construction of sensory data, stored knowledge and expectations (McLeod, 2007). Research would suggest that although some argue that perception is due to nature, while other argues for nurture, it may in fact be that the two factors are interdependent and rely on each other. After all, it would be most adaptive to be born with some ‘hard wired systems’ which can be pruned and then developed to suit our environment. The human senses have enough strength to enable us to survive and develop our knowledge of our surrounding world to a point a point which we feel comfortable. Each sense has its limitations as well as its capability to be influenced by our inherited preferences, memories or previous knowledge. The senses an also be influenced by certain human states as tiredness, drug/alcohol abuse, nutritional deficiencies are all detrimental to the sensitivity of senses causing us to perceive something mistakenly. Our senses tell us similar things: through our different experiences in life we absorb the facts in different ways.

Why I Chose To Be An Airline Pilot †Personal Essay

Why I Chose To Be An Airline Pilot – Personal Essay Free Online Research Papers Why I Chose To Be An Airline Pilot Personal Essay I have a love of flying that I have had since I was a young child. The fascination of flying has never left me. I remember I would have vivid waking dreams of flying when I was a child, and later as a teenager all that I wanted was to buy or build an ultra-light aircraft so that I could fly it around the river area near our home. Thankfully my father convinced me to take some flying lessons instead, and I never stopped the lessons. So I have chosen to be an airline pilot because I love flying and to me being an airline pilot is one of the most satisfying achievements in aviation. Personal satisfaction is one of the reasons I have chosen to be an airline pilot. Having worked many jobs in different industries, I have learned that job satisfaction is personally very important, i.e. the feeling of a good job well done. The personal satisfaction that comes from being part of a professional and successful team/organization. Being an airline pilot for Qantas will bring me those feelings of fulfillment and achievement. The challenges I have encountered have been many and varied. I completed my restricted private pilots license during high school, and later worked two and sometimes three jobs at once to pay for my PPL, CPL and IFR training. I have uprooted and moved home many times, often with very short notice. The permanent bases I have had for flying include Mildura, Melbourne, Wagga Wagga, Alice Springs, Mackay, and Coonabarabran. I have enjoyed seeing different parts of our country while building up my flying hours. Tort. Causation and remoteness of damage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Tort. Causation and remoteness of damage - Essay Example The concept appears simple, but proving the chain of causation between the violation of a duty by the defendant and the resulting injury upon the claimant’s person or property can sometimes be extremely hard. Nonetheless, the fundamental test is to establish whether the harm would have taken happened without the defendant’s violation of the responsibility owed to the aggrieved party. This paper examines causation and remoteness as the primary tests for proving negligence claims. Negligence claims for tort have become increasingly common in modern societies because they safeguard the interests of parties and prevent personal injury upon other persons (Abraham, 2013). In such cases, if the negligent acts of an accused party are found to have attracted other material costs to the claimant, then the former party can be liable for the additional costs of harm as well. According to Stauch (2001), Asbestos negligence proceedings which have been instituted for many decades are based upon the concept of causation. The claims are normally interwoven with the ordinary concept of an individual or party causing injury to others through soared insurance bills, medical, or operational costs among other compensable claims. With hefty compensations for such injuries seemingly secondary losses, some defendants have been severely affected by the negative economic impacts.

Self Esteem Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Self Esteem - Essay Example erefore, it plays an important role in motivation, work-related attitudes and behaviors of employees that due to such experience can consider themselves experts in certain area. There is also an organization-based self-esteem, which is related to the extent of employees to be satisfied with one’s job, commitment to the organization and in-role performance. While at workplace self-esteem is associated with the self-efficacy of a specific task, its main principle is that individuals are more likely to do and succeed in those activities for which they have higher self-efficacy than others  (Lunenberg, 2011). People are more successful in accomplishment of those tasks which align with their initial beliefs, thus, self-esteem aims to work as the self-fulfillment. Besides, in such a fast-paced and technologically oriented society, there is a considerable positive impact of self-esteem that enables careerists to compete (Andersen & Vandehey, 2011). As the employee makes a statement that one is the best Java programmer at certain company, that means that an individual possesses specialized expertise that is unknown to that extent to other employees and to the boss. In that case, the self-esteem of all the members of the work culture would perceive the best Java programmer as another unit that has special set of abilities and experiences. Hi gh levels of self-esteem that is needed to all employees create more beneficial economical predispositions for the company, while the defensive reactions of employees of low self-esteem can damage as own careers as negatively impact company’s performance. Underestimating own abilities create professional and personal envy toward others; employees with low self-esteem criticize others as they feel certain threat that come from the new ideas and more contributions of the confident co-worker. On the contrary, those with high self-esteem employees are able to promote honest feedback for workers regarding areas that need improvement and

Strategic Management Outline Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 2

Strategic Management - Outline Example Barriers against International Trade Critics believe that factors that influence international trade undermine globalisation (Haberberg and Rieple, 2007:8). The factors include tariffs, licenses, embargos, and investment and exchange control with a view of protecting trade in the international market. The above factors influence the entry behaviour into the international market. Economic analysts have identified reasons behind the resistance to globalisation. These reasons are environmental influences that emanate due to international trade, employment abuses, and perceived inequality of benefits derived from globalisation. Many countries show concern about the treatment that their citizens get whenever they operate in the international scene. Conflicts that arise due to poor treatment may justify resistance to efforts towards globalisation. Benefits derived from the global market are very crucial to globalisation. The players in the international scene bring low-income countries and the developed countries. The transactions between these two groups usually differ. Economists have demonstrated that the benefits that developed nations acquire in the international market are higher when compared to low income countries. This situation tends to justify rejection of globalisation. The international Environment The trade in the international market usually take place within and between Europe, USA, and Japan. This trade depend on political and legal issues, which influence the relationship between these countries, cultural and social issues; shapes the products consumed by these nations, and the infrastructure within these countries. Infrastructure is very crucial because it dictates the operation of factors, which influence the international scene. For instance, transport network and communication determines the ability to deliver products in the international market. The international politics define the environment within which the international players would pre sent their items. The political system dictates policies, which influence globalisation. The legal system of a country would derive its policies from the nation’s political system. These policies would influence the economic climate because they regulate business operations in the international scene. Critics believe that political intervention may affect taxes levied against products in the international market. The interventional by various political systems are evident through inflation and currency rate control. Social and cultural issues are very instrumental to globalisation. The beliefs and values in the international environment would influence practices such as consumer behaviour, expectation of the employees. The understanding of dynamism in the international culture would influence the approach applied by firms in the international market. Critics believe that cultural attributes observed in the international market depend on infrastructural development in a countr y (Haberberg and Rieple, 2007:12). For instance, employee’s skill would depend on education system of that country. On the other hand, telephone, electricity or transport system would dictate the behaviour adopted by various firms. Social policy - the rule of law as referring to an ideal condition Essay

Social policy - the rule of law as referring to an ideal condition - Essay Example Since the point is to restrain the coercive activities of government, these general rules should not be framed so as to discriminate either against or in favour of any group of persons known in advance-against Jews or Blacks, for example. Laws against speeding lay down general rules of this kind: they apply equally to all motorists, and they do not single out particular individuals (say, BMW drivers) for special attention. Retrospective legislation is likely to violate the rule of law on this interpretation since its victims and beneficiaries usually can be identified in advance. 1 General rules of this kind that are announced in advance are a defence against the arbitrary actions of governments. They are necessary in Hayek's view both for the proper working of the market and for the existence of liberty precisely because they allow individuals to plan their affairs secure in the knowledge that government powers will not be used deliberately to frustrate their efforts. Once governments go beyond the enforcement of certain general rules, their activities inevitably involve the coercion of particular individuals. ... From this point of view there is no reason in principle why governments should not concern themselves with the regulation of economic affairs. But their interventions should take the form of a framework of laws within which markets can operate, rather than the direction of economic activity by a central authority. 2 Here and elsewhere, Hayek discusses government social and economic policy as if interference with market operations inevitably involves the infringement of liberty. It is not clear why that should be the case. Consider the example raised by Pigou in his review of The Road to Serfdom (Pigou 1944). The wartime practice of directing particular individuals into specific jobs is an infringement of liberty that may be defended for a limited period on the grounds of national emergency.3 This example, the occupational choices of individuals is certainly constrained as a result of government policy. But, from the point of view of those affected, the manner in which they are constrained is no different from the effects of market forces. It seems then that government interference in markets is to count as a coercive infringement of liberty, whether or not it is experienced as such by the individuals concerned. 4 Similar considerations apply to the welfare state. It is entirely proper for governments to be concerned with the welfare of their citizens, provided only that their welfare activities are constrained by the rule of law. The difficulty in discussing 'the welfare state', in Hayek's view, is that the term has no clear meaning. Some of the activities normally included under that heading are unobjectionable and may even 'make a free society more attractive, others are

Cryptology and Data Protection Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Cryptology and Data Protection - Research Paper Example Some experts argue that cryptography emerged suddenly sometime after writing was discovered (Smith, 2015). With uses stretching from discreet communications to the war-duration combat plans, it is no surprise that new methods of cryptography appeared shortly after the extensive growth of computer communications. Telecommunications and data cryptography is essential when interacting over any unsecure channel, which comprises of almost all networks, especially the Internet (Zimmerman, 1994). This paper discusses the cryptography of information and the protection of data. Within the framework of every application-to-application communication, there are certain definite security necessities, comprising: Authentication which is the process of confirming a user’s identification (Burgess, 2008). However, presently the internet primary forms of host-to-host authentication are address-based or name-based, which are very weak authentication. Confidentiality/Privacy is safeguarding that no unintended persons can receive the message apart from the projected recipient. Integrity is the state of guaranteeing the recipient that the intercepted message has not been changed in any manner from the original. Non-repudiation is the mechanism to verify that the correspondent really conducted the transaction of sending that particular message (Chandra, 2009). Cryptography, not only safeguards data from hacking or modification, but can also be used for user identification. There are three forms of cryptographic structures in general normally employed to achieve these objectives. Namely: secret key also known as the symmetric cryptography, hash functions and public-key also known as asymmetric cryptography (Oecd, 2015). In all instances, the first unhidden data is identified as plain text. It is encoded into cipher text, which eventually is decoded into operational plain text (Pezaro, 2015). There are two keys

Strategic Management company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words

Strategic Management company - Essay Example Thompson, M and Strickland, P. (2004) mentioned that the term Strategic management refers to the managerial process of forming a strategic vision, setting objectives, crafting a strategy, implementing and executing the strategy and then over time initiating whatever corrective adjustments in the vision, objectives, strategy and execution are deemed appropriate 1. Michael J. S. & David W. G. (1997) stated that Strategic management process requires competent individuals to insure its success 2. The production system of Coopers Creek was one of the key reasons to become successful in international markets. The production system at Coopers Creek was set up to produce in 25-30 tonne batches; a modular approach based on grape truckload capacities. The company had the capacity to crush 100-120 tonnes of grapes a day, giving it a major aggressive advantage. Coopers Creek was involved in infrequent production-based collaborations with a group of local West Auckland wineries. As well as grape devastating at key times, the wineries swapped grapes, shared kit and jointly purchased key inputs; for example, Coopers Creek shared the expenses of container-loads of barrels with three other wineries. Coopers Creek was vigorously involved in the Canadian and US Country Action Groups in conditions of combined promotional efforts. A clear and entrepreneurially astute strategic vision is a prerequisite to effective strategic leadership. Managers cannot function effectively as either leaders or strategy makers without a future oriented concept of the business - what customer needs to work toward satisfying, what business activities to pursue, what kind of company to try to create. Coopers Creek has followed following steps and has been able to achieve success in their market. Charting a company's course begins with senior management looking at the road ahead and addressing the following questions: where do we go from here What changes lie ahead in the business landscape And what difference will these changes make to the company's present business Peter M. G. Linda E. S. & Jack D. W. (2005) have stated that forming a strategic vision is thus not merely a wordsmithing exercise designed to create a catchy company slogan. Rather it is an exercise in thinking carefully about where a company needs to head to be succes sful. It involves selecting the market arenas in which to participate, putting the company on a strategic path, and making a commitment to follow that path 3. Three elements of strategic visions: The number one is coming up with a mission statement that defines what business the company is presently in and conveys the essence of which we are what we do and where we are now. Using the mission statement as a basis for deciding on a long-term course, making choices about where we are

Mise En Scene Of Titanic Film Studies Essay

Mise En Scene Of Titanic Film Studies Essay This is the final chapter; the Mise-en-scene and Ideological model will be discussed and applied to the findings and analysis that have been discussed in chapter four. Besides that, this chapter will be answering the research question in chapter one, the achievement of the objective of this study will be discussed also. At last, there will have some suggestion for the future research in order to improve and develop a better thesis on this particular topic. 5.1 Concepts and Theories Applied There have two concepts and theories that applied in this research, which is the mise-en-scene and ideological models. Both theories will be discussed and applied to the findings and analysis that have been discussed in chapter four. 5.1.1 Concepts and Theories Applied Mise-en-scene The film Titanic has attracted audiences mind successfully, this is applicable to the theory mise-en-scene. According to Timothy Corrigan (1994), the mise-en-scene is a French term that roughly translated as what is put into the scene (put before the camera). So, based on the mise-en-scene theory, in order to produce a successful film, filmmaker needs to decide what put into the scene before the shooting work. There have five elements of mise-en-scene which are the setting, costume and make-up, lighting, space and also acting style. These five mise-en-scene elements are the key to make the film Titanic successfully. The setting in this film has created the contrast between higher and lower classes. The vivid acting style by several main and supporting characters has enhanced the storyline, and also made the story run smoothly. Lighting in this film has created meaning in all scenes, the mood has enhanced through different lighting in several scenes. The costume in this film is functional in telling audiences that the different characteristic of the characters in the scene, its also enhanced the contrasted class level in this film. Space arrangement in this film has giving the meaning to the particular scene through different camera placement and camera shot. According to Heather Logas and Daniel Muller (2005), mise-en-scene in used in all genres of fill to shows the full range of human emotion. Through the focus group, respondent M1 and F1 are telling that the scene of Jack lets Rose lying on the wood after the ship sank is memorable to them, because this scene is emotional, and showing that the best human emotion in that kind of situation. Respondent F2 has credited to the scene the flying scene of Jack and Rose at the ship, this scene is romantically, she said that the mise-en-scene elements in this scene have done well. Based on the results on focus group, more than a half respondent are preferred the acting style when viewing a film. Debi Buckner (1983) stated that the actors job is to convey a message to the particular audiences. They will fail in their task if their work is so obvious that audiences are more concerned with their effort than with the message to be conveyed in the film. In the focus group, all respondents are only called the name of the main characters as Jack and Rose, there has nobody to call their name as Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, this is fulfilled the statement of Debi Buckner (1983), because audiences watching the film are only remember their characters name and their characteristic in the film, the actor and actress has convey the message successfully in this film, the name Jack and Rose are still memorable while people discussing about the film Titanic. Heather Logas and Daniel Muller (2005) stated that the exploration of the concept of mise-en-scene has allowed filmmakers to communicate information to the particular viewers. Mise-en-scene is a holistic approach in the frame constructing process. Through the focus group in chapter 4, all the respondents are agreed that the film Titanic is a film successfully attracted audiences mind and created a lot of memorable scene. Until today, they are still remembering some particular scene in this film. 5.1.2 Concepts and Theories Applied Ideological Models Ideological models refer to the relationship between the films and society in terms of the representation of social and political realities. So, most of the films would add in the ideological elements into the plot or story. Teun A. Van Dijk (1996) stated that a variety of discursive structures and strategies might be used in order to express the ideological beliefs and also the social or personal opinions derived from them. Through the focus group, most of the respondents are stated that the class studies are strong portrayed in the film Titanic. The contrasting between higher and lower classes is obviously seen in this film. Respondent M1 said that the scene that the memorable class studies applied in this film is the lower class peoples are playing lousy instrumental and sing the local song at the lower floor of the ship while higher class peoples are playing violin, piano at the upper floor of the ship, the different treat to the different class in the ship is most obvious to portray the class studies in this film. Respondent F3 has noticed that the lifestyle of the passenger in the ship is also the class studies that the filmmaker intends to portrayed in the film Titanic, because the film was shows that the same social status people should group together. Most of the respondent in the focus group has stated that the ideological class studies were applied in the film Titanic. According to Douglas Kellner (1991), ideology refers to primarily, which those ideas that legitimate the particular class rule of the capitalist ruling class, ideology is those sets of ideas to promote the capitalist class economic interests. Respondent F4 stated that most of the time the higher class will look down at the lower class in the film Titanic. In this film, audiences can see the higher class, which is the rich person is having the special treatment in the ship. After the ship hits the iceberg, most of the save boat in the ship are given seat primary to the higher class, this is showing the contrasting between the poor and rich person treatment. Furthermore, Mise-en-scene elements in this film are aided to portray the ideological elements, especially the costume and setting between the lower and higher class people in the ship. Higher class is wearing the high quality and extravagantly shirt/dress, but the dressing of lower class is casually and low quality. For the setting, higher class are in the upper level with extravagant decoration, but the lower class are in the lower level with simple decoration. Because the mise-en-scene makes the ideological elements obvious in the scene, so, audiences can easily to get the message that the filmmaker intended to send out. Answering Research Questions How were the five elements of mise-en-scene applied into the movie Titanic? Through the content analysis, findings showed that the film Titanic has successful with well done of mise-en-scene elements. These five mise-en-scene elements are acting style, setting, space arrangement, costume and lighting. All the above elements was applied into the film Titanic to enhanced the storyline and also make the story run smoothly. Based on the findings of content analysis in chapter 4, the setting in this film has created the contrast between higher and lower classes. So, these five mise-en-scene elements in the film Titanic is the important key to make this film successfully and memorable. What are the ideological elements portray in the movie Titanic? The film Titanic always showing different classes of people can get different treat in the ship. This film has shows the social status obviously through their lifestyle, this film has shows that same social status should be grouping together. The status symbol in this film is being portrayed most of the time especially the higher class will look down at the lower class. Following is the costume; because it can giving audiences the knowledge about the England last century high and low classes people costumes. Besides that, findings showed that the most preferred mise-en-scene element by when viewing a film is the acting style. Four of the respondents said that they are preferred acting style when viewing a film. Women in the 1990s Essay -- Essays Papers

Women in the 1990's In today’s technological society it is hard to imagine that trivial things from the past like discrimination or prejudice are still present, but they are. Yes we still have racism, but for the most part this is only a problem of the less educated and vocal minority. There is a different prejudice that is deep rooted in this land of freedom and prosperity. This prejudice is sexism. The basic definition of sexism is when a person of either sex is discriminated against in any way based on their gender. But history has recorded that men, usual in every society in this world, have always been the dominant sex and women have taken a lower role. This has been especially true in the United States throughout its history. Women always seemed to be the one who took care of the children and home as the men went to work and earned a living. Women do not have the choice to give birth to children, but they should have a choice in whether they are the primary care givers to that child. Betty Friedan, a well-known feminist, writes, â€Å"We are still very mother-centered. It’s still ‘mother, mother, mother,’ when it really should be ‘mother, father, society.’†1 What she means by this is that society still has not overcome the discriminatory thought that the mother should not work and stay home with the kids. Although this is very deep rooted, women in today’s society are making advancements, in part because of the efforts of Betty Friedan. Friedan wrote the Feminist Mystique, a book about women's roles in society in the 1950's. This book is often reviered as the most influential piece of women's rights which sparked the movement for change. In 1966, Friedan cofounded a organization called NOW, and was named the presid... ...nt aspects were discussed and brought to the world’s attention. The attention that it received helped to bring about awareness of women’s rights all over the world. Not only did it bring about awareness of inequality; it helped to set the standards and goals which they wanted to achieve. They discussed issues ranging from abortion to lesbian right's .3 As you can see, there are many changes being brought about in the 1990’s to reform the way women are treated and looked upon in a sexist world society ruled by men. Although these groups and individuals have not yet reached their final goal of equality for all, they have got the message out that this is unacceptable. Nothing happens overnight, there are many steps to reform and these groups are on the right path. They are starting to get societies to see that women are human too and they should be treated as equal.

My lifelong Hobby

While it is true that hobbies are activities we engage ourselves in during our extra times for personal pleasure and relaxation (Microsoft Encarta, 2006), hobbies are also quite expensive and time-consuming for scores of people and occasions. However, when we do what we enjoy expense will always be a secondary thing: the love for the pastime consumes us and leads us to explore all the facets of our interest.I love to draw, experiment with a variety of the painting medium and make people happy by giving them the fruit of my labors. Since grade school years, people in my grade came to know me as one who spends break time or recess as my opportunity to finish with â€Å"orders† from classmates who asked for artistic letterings of their names. Just what are the nuances of this hobby and how did I develop my output from the time I was a very young school child? My hobby is drawing, painting and acquiring a collection of a variety of drawing and painting materials and guides to help me expand my knowledge of creativity and artistry. This paper attempts to briefly elaborate the three types of drawing, which includes doodling, sketching and coloring that I am usually acquainted of and do during my free hours.II. What is doodling and how does one look like when he/she doodles?Doodling is â€Å"to draw something aimlessly or absent-mindedly, usually while doing something else such as attending a meeting (Microsoft Encarta, 2006) and one of the â€Å"funny† parts that I oftentimes do in the presence of other people. This form of artistic ability is very common. It doesn’t take for one to be artistic in order to doodle; however, no artist probably would ever say they have not spent a time that they did not doodle. Attending a class for example or talking with a friend on the phone are perfect times that I get to doodle.Whenever a class starts to get boring, I would pull out my scratch of paper and ball pen and start to make circles or squares, and usual ly end up later with a very messy job at the tip of my pen. Though seemingly an aimless performance to some, this is actually the time when I develop appetite for details and other times mull over how to either imitate an artistic work, or practice those new skills I have adapted.III. What is sketching and how does it differ with doodling?Sketching is drawing a â€Å"picture done quickly and roughly: a drawing or painting that is done quickly without concern for detail† (Microsoft Encarta, 2006). While doodling is almost like its twin, oftentimes it is not the serious type of this skill. Sketching is more of a prelude of what the work will look like when it is finished. It is like a first layer of the foundational principles of drawing, and a body to the artistic work. It tests your patience also whenever you have difficulty achieving the â€Å"look† you want.IV. What is coloring and why does it matter considerably in an artwork?Coloring is applying color to a sketch o r drawing (Microsoft Encarta, 2006). Even before I start to draw, I already have in mind what medium works best with the type of picture I will sketch. This is most crucial for an artist. Many are great â€Å"drawers† but whose work is buried underneath piles of color. This is one area of the artistic expression that also shows texture and life to a drawing.V. ConclusionWhen I doodle, sketch or color, it spells to me luxury. Time is a fleeting resource and doodling, sketching and coloring are skills that make life less boring and predictable. Friendship is built time and again, because of my skills in drawing.Life is a lot like these three: it cannot be hurried. For an artwork to be certified beautiful, time is of the essence. When we pause to ponder and think about our many options in life, we should also strive not only to stop in the â€Å"doodling† or â€Å"sketching† phase, but rub on the hues on an otherwise drab portrait. Spread over affections on people who matter most in your life, and experience the beauty that emerges from their beings.Reference:1. Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2006.  © 1993-2005 Microsoft Corporation. Feudalism and Court Services Vassals

Feudalism began in France around A. D. 900 and spread. The feudal hierarchy was an arrangement of rank resembling a pyramid. At the top of the pyramid was the king. In the feudal relationship the king was the suzerain, or lord, of a group of dukes and counts who were his vassals. Each of these vassals was in turn lord to lesser vassals, who had even less important vassals. At the bottom of the pyramid were the knights, who had no vassals. Lord and vassal owed certain obligations to each other. The vassal pledged to perform certain services for his lord, and in return the lord granted him a fief, or fee. A fief was anything that was considered useful or valuable. Usually, a fief was a piece of land, jurisdiction over the peasants who lived on the land, and ownership of the goods they produced. All fiefs were technically owned by the king, but a vassal held, in effect, all the rights of ownership of the fief as long as he performed the services required by his lord. The entire kingdom was divided into fiefs, except for the land held by the king personally. Feudal tenure was hereditary. When a vassal died, his heir did homage for his fief and swore an oath of fealty to his lord, promising to be faithful and render service. In the ceremony of investiture, the lord handed his vassal some symbol—such as a sword or a clod of earth—in token of title, and promised to defend the vassal's fief. If a vassal died leaving a minor heir, the lord usually became the guardian of the fief and managed it. If the heir was an unmarried daughter, the lord could select a husband for her because only a male could perform the services of the fief. Feudal services were the services that a vassal owed his lord varied. Military or Knight Service: A vassal was expected to serve his lord in war. Usually he served 40 days a year at his own expense if engaged in an offensive action against his lord's enemy. In a defensive action the term of service was unlimited. A knight was expected to furnish only his horse and armor, but great vassals had to supply hundreds of knights and men-at-arms. With Court Services vassals had to serve, when summoned, in the lord's court. They were called upon to give the lord advice. They also met in assembly to settle disputes between vassals. This was the origin of the principle of trial by a jury of peers, or equals. Vassals were also summoned for ceremonial occasions, such as investitures. Financial Obligations included: A relief, or gift, to the lord when the fief passed to an heir. It amounted usually to a year's income. Aids, payments made by vassals when their lord needed additional resources. A common aid was to help ransom the lord when he was taken prisoner in war. Other aids were given when the lord's eldest daughter was married and when his eldest son became a knight. They were obligated to entertain the lord when he paid a visit. During feudal warfare a powerful vassal who did not fulfill his obligations could usually withstand his lord's wrath if he owned a strong castle, since medieval castles were almost impossible to overrun. Forty days' service—the usual limit for knights in the attacking force—left insufficient time for siege operations. Private warfare between nobles who were neither lord nor vassal to each other was common in France, since the king could not control the vassals of his vassals. The church sought to limit strife by forbidding warfare on certain days of the week and during church festivals. Chivalry developed as a code of conduct for knights. Feudalism came to an end as the kings increased their power and forced the lesser landowners to obey their orders. Feudalism was introduced in England in 1066 following the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest. The Normans, led by William the Conqueror who was crowned King William I of England were responsible for introducing feudalism to England. Feudalism was based on the exchange of land for military service. William the Conqueror claimed all the land in England and divide the land between himself (about 20%), the church (about 25%) and the remainder of English land was given to Norman soldiers and nobles (barons). Following the Norman Conquest William the Conqueror ordered a full survey of England which was called the Doomsday Book. It gave the new King of England full details of the land, the people and how much taxes and dues would be paid to the Normans. Under the Feudal system the vassals who were awarded land swore an Oath of Fealty to their lord and provided fully equipped soldiers under the Feudal Levy. Medieval Serfs were peasants who worked his lord's land and paid him certain dues in return for the use of land, the possession (not the ownership) of which was heritable. When the land changed owners during the time of feudalism the peasants were obliged to work for the new owners – the Normans. The decline of feudalism in England occurred due to many events including the Black Death, changes from a land-based economy to a money based economy and the establishment of Centralized government. Feudalism began in 410 AD with the fall of Rome. Feudalism in Germany was different from that of France and England. The old Germanic tribes which plagued the Roman emperors emerged again after Charlemagne's successors lost power. Four stem duchies eventually emerged as the most powerful in Germany: Saxony, Franconia, Swabia, and Bavaria. One strong duke, Otto of Saxony (936-973) tried to establish lordship over the other dukes. He invaded Italy, starting a long tradition of German interference in that peninsula, and made himself King of Italy. He was then crowned emperor by the pope himself (962). The strong points were; l) fragmentation of political power; 2) public power in private hands; and 3) armed forces secured through private contracts. Feudalism is, therefore, a method of government, and a way of securing the forces necessary to preserve that method of government. It is also an extreme form of decentralization. There many centers of power. Power does not reside at a center, or at the top, even though there a pyramidal structure in theory, with the emperor at the top and the simple knight at the bottom. The weak points were weak central power and realizing that a strong defense relied on a single leader. Napoleon was a leader during that time. Feudalism in Germany ended in the 15th century at about the same time England's Feudalism ended, as well as the rest of Europe's feudalism.

Caffeine and its effects on the human body Essay

Over 90% of Americans consume caffeine every day of the year. Caffeine is the ingredient that makes the public crave coffee, soda, chocolate and many other caffeine-carrying products. Americans consume about 45 million pounds of caffeine each year. In the United States, coffee drinkers drink an average of 2.6 cups per day. Total caffeine intake for coffee drinkers was 363.5 mg per day – this includes caffeine from coffee and other sources like soft drinks, food and drugs. Non-coffee drinkers get plenty of caffeine as well: former coffee drinkers get about 107 mg per day and people who have never had coffee get about 91 mg per day. Many facts are known about caffeine, such as its composition, effect on the human body, and origin; however, there are many long term effects that are currently being studied in order to discover how harmful this substance truly is. [Caffeine- Neuroscience for Kids] Caffeine occurs naturally from the coffee tree indigenous to Ethiopia, and it may have been used as early as 850 AD in Upper Egypt, though it is considered a legend. Coffee is the seed of a cherry from the tree of the genus Coffea. The tree yields about one kilogram of coffee per year. There are over 25 different species of coffee, the three main ones being Robusta, Libaria, and Arabica. The Ethiopians mixed crushed dried coffee beans with rolled fat balls used as food on journeys. Its cultivation and use as a beverage occurred in Arabia. By the early 16th century, the beverage was well-established in the Islamic world. Through cultural diffusion, coffee was a fashionable drug of the 17th and 18th centuries. From thereon, coffee’s popularity grew tremendously. America owes its present day coffee habits to the Boston tea party of 1773, which made coffee’s availability easier. [Owen, Daniel] Caffeine is an organic substance medically known as trimethylxanthine, and its chemical formula is C8H10N4O2. Caffeine is an alkaloid. There are numerous alkaloids. These compounds have different biochemical effects, and are present in different ratios in different plant sources. These compounds are very similar and differ only by the presence of methyl groups in two positions of the chemical structure. They are easily oxidized to uric acid and other methyluric acids, which are also similar in chemical structure  .Pure caffeine is odorless and has a bitter taste. This chemical is a useful cardiac stimulant and mild diuretic substance, or increases urine production. Many people take advantage of its energizing sensation; hence, it has become the world’s most widely used drug. Caffeine increases dopamine levels, like cocaine and heroin but to a lower extent. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in specific parts of the brain that can activate pleasure sensations. Because caffeine be longs to the xanthine chemical group, it interferes with the production of adenosine in the brain. Xanthenes are yellow crystalline organic compounds that are soluble in ether and are used as a fungicide and in organic synthesis. Adenosine is a naturally occurring xanthine used as a neurotransmitter in the brain. Adenosine binding to the brain causes slowing down of the nerve cells and drowsiness. Caffeine is very similar to adenosine, since they are from the xanthine chemical group. Caffeine interferes with the binding of adenosine because nerve cells recognize the intruding caffeine as adenosine. When caffeine binds to the receptors, nerve cells speed up. Caffeine causes the brain’s blood vessels to constrict because it blocks the adenosine’s ability to open them up. When the caffeine blocks the adenosine, neurons start firing at an accelerated pace. Henceforth, the brain’s signals help to other body parts, causing them to react. The pituitary gland reacts to the signals of excessive neural activity and sees it as an emergency. It then releases hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands then produce adrenaline thought out the body, Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by the adrenal medulla in response to stress and it stimulates autonomic nerve action. Adrenaline causes: dilation of the pupils, expansion of respiratory tubes, an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, tightening of muscles in order to make them ready for action, a release of sugar by the liver into the bloodstream for extra sugar, and increase blood flow to muscles. The euphoric feeling induced by caffeine makes the chemical addictive to its consumers. [â€Å"Caffeine,† Microsoft ® Encarta ® Online Encyclopedia 2004] Caffeine, like any other drug, is addictive. The long term effects of caffeine are unhealthy as they change the natural chemistry of the brain, primarily sleep. Adenosine is important to deep sleep because it causes proper reactions in the brain during sleep, yet caffeine interrupts its  function. The half-life of caffeine in a human body is about six hours long, meaning that for six hours the consumer’s body and brain will be in an accelerated state. This can tire the body, especially the heart, which has to keep up in speed to pump the necessary blood throughout the body. After months of use, a person who consumes caffeine may develop a dependency on the drug because his/her body has grown accustomed to being stimulated by the foreign substance. Withdrawal symptoms are common among caffeine consumers, which is a body’s way to ask for caffeine. Headaches, stomach cramps, irritation, and depression are common symptoms of caffeine withdrawal. These symptoms can occur within 24 hours after the last dose of caffeine. In huge doses, caffeine is lethal. A fatal dose of caffeine has been calculated to be more than 10 grams (about 170 mg/kg body weight) – this is the same as drinking 80 to 100 cups of coffee in rapid succession. Like many other chemicals, caffeine is deadly in large doses. [Caffeine- Neuroscience for Kids] There are many harmful effects which caffeine is blamed for, but there is no solid proof of most of the accusations. Pediatricians and Nutritionists argue that caffeine is harmful to developing individuals, mainly children and adolescents. They think that by using caffeine, the developing individuals are upsetting the normal and natural balances of neurochemistry. Withdrawal shows that there has been a disturbance in the brain since the brain rewires itself to crave the caffeine. In addition, a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine found the effects of caffeine on pregnant women. The equivalent of one to three cups of coffee increases the risk of miscarriage of pregnant women by 30%. Consumption of three to five cups increases the risk by 40%. The study was directed by Dr. Sven Cnattilgils involved 562 women between six to twelve weeks of pregnancy. After the publication of the study in 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the March of Dime, which finds r esearch on birth defects, have advised pregnant women to avoid caffeine. There were several other studies made with regard to infertility in women between 1987 and 1990 by the Centers for Disease Control and Harvard University. They found that caffeine had little or no influence in infertility. Caffeine has also been linked to calcium loss in bones, yet its effects are not strong enough to be  considered dangerous by the FDA. Aside from the negative aspects of caffeine, the drug is used in prescription and nonprescription drugs because it boosts their power. Aspirin and other painkillers contain caffeine to improve its effectiveness. Furthermore, a study by the Journal of the American Medical association suggests that consuming caffeine may help prevent Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’ disease is a progressive nervous disease happening most often after the age of 50, associated with the destruction of brain cells that produce dopamine and characterized by weakness, muscular tremor, slowing of movement, and partial facial paralysis. Apparently, caffeine reduces the neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, which can kill neurons under certain conditions the same way it reduces adenosine. Caffeine also increases the levels of dopamine in the body, which are destroyed by Parkinson’s disease. Caffeine can also be used to treat asthma attacks as it stimulates the production of adrenaline, causing the respiratory muscles to expand. [Cherniske, Stephen & Weinberg,B.A] In summary, caffeine is the world’s most widely used drug for a reason. It triggers pleasure areas in the brain that cause its user feelings of elation. However, using caffeine in excess or for a prolonged amount of time can be hazardous to health by causing problems such as birth defects, miscarriages, and the body’s dependence. Though there are no concrete studies on the neurological effects of caffeine, many doctors and scientists agree that caffeine is not as safe as it appears. They recommend that consumers be careful of how much caffeine they are using or possibly abusing, since health is too precious to ignore.

Realism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Realism - Essay Example Various heated arguments have developed on realism and many scholars have come out their own construed versions of the perceived realism. Kenneth Waltz argues that all of the various explanations for the causes of war can be easily filtered into three images: that of man, the state and the international system. Applying Waltz’s logic to the realist camp, distinct categories of explanations can be readily identified. For example, traditional realism, with its emphasis on individuals, explains international phenomena and state behaviour from the point of view that human nature is intrinsically evil. Structural realism on the other hand throws out this assumption, and conducts an analysis based on the objective nature of the international structure, a system-level analysis. From the perspective of units of analysis, the different casual stories told by realist thinkers can be divided into three distinct categories: human nature realism, state-centric realism and system-centric realism2. Human nature realism, also known as biological realism, 3Donelly emphasizes man's biological abilities and intrinsically evil nature. Most classical realists (including the many modern political philosophers who have contributed to the development of realist thought), including especially Machiavelli, Herbert Butterfield, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Hans Morgenthau fall into this category. Morgenthau's theory is the best example of human nature realism in international relations. In â€Å"Politics among Nations†, Morgenthau. presents a systematic discussion of the basic principles of realism. The first of these principles consists of an assumption regarding the role of human nature in politics: politics 'is governed by the objective laws that have their root in human nature.' In Morgenthau's view, 'political man is a selfish animal, and all human behaviour tends towards the control of others.' As a result, battles over power are rooted in human nature and as such are central to politics.4 State-centric realism looks for explanations for international relations phenomena and state behaviour from the vantage point of individual states (including national attributes, national interests and domestic politics). It is generally thought that realism does not concern domestic aspects of politics, or that consideration of such domestic issues represents a step away from realism's core concerns. Griffiths. M (1999) this type of view though represents an obvious misunderstanding of realism. The neo-classical realism argues more explicitly that individual states should be integrated into the theories of foreign policy. Scholars working to these ends have attempted to establish a connection between the state and system-levels of analysis, and have emphasized the role of domestic factors in explaining how state behaviour leads to outcomes at the system level. From the writings of the mainstream neo-classical realists, states are still treated as the determining factors in the analysis of foreign policy and state behaviour, thus these theories are considered to be 'second image' theories.

Business system Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Business system - Assignment Example The system combined information system with indicators in the identification of parking areas. The project is affected by time and resource limitations. The financial resources required to plan for and implement the parking system, should be effectively budgeted for. The system should be implemented by a competent computer programmer in consultation with the building architect. It is thus assumed that MUN has adequate finances that will be used in implementing the project. The project also requires 2 months to be a success. It is thus expected that MUN has adequately created a schedule for the implementation of the parking system project. It is also assumed that the project will be environmentally friendly. This is through minimizing fuel use, because drivers quickly notice available parking slots. The Car Park Guidance System (CPGS) gives drivers dynamic data concerning parking in a controlled environment, like in the parking area of MUN. CPGS is alternatively referred to as the Parking Guidance and Information systems (PGI). CPGS integrates traffic monitoring, variable message sign, GPS, communication and processing technologies, to give the service. The modern parking spaces apply several technologies that assist motorists in; getting parking lots that are unoccupied, locating their vehicles, and also enhancing their parking experience. The technologies involve adaptive lighting, indoor positioning system (IPS), sensors, and also space led indicators. The red indicator illustrates an occupied space, the green indicator illustrates available space, and the blue indicator illustrating reservation for the elderly. The PGI is a key component of the intelligence transport system, which is mainly applicable in urban area environments and institutions like the MUN. The PGI assists in the implementation of an effective, efficient, environmentally friendly, and safe parking space. The PGI system operates

Taoism Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Taoism Religion - Essay Example It does not matter whatever religion exists as long as the person becomes a good being to himself and to others. Basically, religions do not only teach morals but also focus on way of life. Rituals are being conducted to help the faithful improve themselves fully as a religious leader assists the religious members in their struggle to be good. The main focus of the paper is the religion Taoism. Taoism came from China as the country had a long history of formation. Taoism became an important part of the history of China though the origin of Taoism is hard to distinguish as it came from complicated roots and Chinese religions mixed as interactions happened. Other religions in China are Confucianism, Buddhism and popular religion. These religions flourished and interact with one another and cultural and traditional mixtures occur resulting to the Chinese religion. Taoism in particular cannot be distinguished easily as it encompasses almost everything about life. Its existence can be com pared to water that composes all bodies of water and even clouds and rain. The discovery of the ultimate purpose is not the same for everybody as pathways are different in that religion as the prominent quality is compared to water that never flows in the same way again. ... Taoism can also be analyzed based on its etymology. The religion comes from the word tao which means road or path as the same term was also used by non-Taoist people. Tao became prominent in Chinese philosophy as their beliefs tend to shape a method or technique and norms of conduct. The term tao first appeared as a philosophical word in the book Analects of the Confucians. They consider tao as the method of behavior for both individual and nation as they pertain to the term as a principle. For the Taoists, the term is not just a principle, it is substance in actuality. Chuang Tzu gave an explanation on the tao and belief of Taoists. According to him, tao is not a substance or a thing only but tao is the sum total of all existence including wastes as a questioner clarified his claim. The main concern of Taoism is the balance of forces which is constant and inseparable that the human mind cannot comprehend its existence. The belief states that humans are indivisible and parts of the o neness as the age of humanity is the same as the age of the sky and earth. As tao is considered as both method and entity, the question arose regarding the purpose of the method. The positive action has no basis in tao. In terms of morals, tao advocates relativity as right and wrong can pertain to the same object depending on the point-of-view. The advice for Taoist practitioners tends to be selfless and let the natural course maneuver the lives of the faithful. They follow the rhythms of nature and environment. Such characteristic of Taoism is called contemplative Taoism which is complemented by the so-called purposive Taoism. As the contemplative Taoism allows calmness for the practitioner, the purposive

Economics in Mexico Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Economics in Mexico - Essay Example However, the 2008 recession affected Mexico and other Latin American nations making its Gross Domestic product contract by more than six percent. Regardless of unprecedented macroeconomic stability that reduced the record of inflation and interest rates to be low, this has made the per capita income increase leading to enormous gaps between populations living in rural areas and urban areas, states on the northern part and the southern part, and between the rich and the poor. Some of the main challenge the Mexican government faces include improvement in infrastructure, modernizing revenue collection system, changing the labor laws and reduction of inequality of the income (Cantwell et al.). Mexico’s economy contains industrial and services sectors that are rapidly growing as well as an increasing private ownership; at the ports, the administration has increased competition, and other things such as distribution of natural gas rail roads, generation of electricity, airports and telecommunications have also increase. The economy of Mexico is often export oriented and over 90% of business that are conducted in Mexico are under free trade agreement with over forty countries that include Israel, Japan, Central America, etc. NAFTA is one of the most influential free trade agreements that are used in Mexico beginning 1994; some of the governments that signed into NAFTA include the United States and Canada. 90% of all the exports and 55% of all the imports that took place in 2006 was between Mexico and two northern partners; there has been an approval of the judicial reforms and import tax from the Congress of Union while the reforms regarding oil industry is still under debate. The labor force of Mexico is seventy eight million and World Trade Organization and OECD rank Mexico’s workers as one of the hardest working globally in numbers of hours worked a year although the profitability per man-hour is relatively low (Cantwell et al.). Mexico is ranked the 16th largest exporter and 82% of all the exports got to the United States, trade with both Canada and the United States has tripled after NAFTA was implemented in 1994. The products manufactured and exported from Mexico is equivalent to the amount of goods produced by all the other Latin American states combined together; hence a large percent of foreign trade takes place in Mexico’s economy as compared to any other large country. Manufactured products are Mexico’s number 1 exports and the country has recently built its infrastructure in order to enhance trade with other countries. Carlos Helu owns a telecommunication company in Mexico and is considered one of the world’s richest men; his company is however a monopoly in Mexico and it controls 70% of all mobile phones, 70% of broadband and 80% of home phones lines. There are concerns that the lack of competition in the telecommunications sector is hampering economic growth and mobile phone penetration in Mexico is similar to that of Iraq at 85%. In Mexico, its costs double to have broadband connection and this is similar to Chile, and things that are near monopolies include the Bimbo, Televisa and Cemex. Mexico is ranked the ninth in oil production and it exports over three million barrels daily; this is less than that of Iraq, Canada, and China but is more when compared to that of Nigeria, Venezuela and Kuwait. Pemex is the country’
